How Much Does the Abortion Pill Cost?

If you’re experiencing an unintended pregnancy, you probably have a lot of serious questions about your options. Perhaps you’re considering the abortion pill but are concerned about how much it costs. Does Montana insurance cover the abortion pill? If not, what will it cost you out-of-pocket? What about follow-up care if you experience any severe side effects?

Before taking the abortion pill, take time to get the facts! Keep reading to learn more about the cost of the abortion pill.

Does Insurance Cover the Abortion Pill in Montana?

At the time of writing (January 2023), some private insurance plans cover the abortion pill, while others don’t. Medicare[1] and Medicaid[2] do not cover it, except in cases of incest, rape, or if abortion is deemed “medically necessary” to save the life of the mother. However, insurance requirements are currently being debated by Montana lawmakers, so all this may change in the future[3].

How Much Does the Abortion Pill Cost Without Insurance?

Without insurance, the abortion pill costs between $500 and $800. Prices vary based on the dosage you need, the provider you purchase it from, and the state in which the provider is located.

Other Abortion Pill Costs to Consider

In addition to the upfront cost of the abortion pill, you should also consider the cost of emergency or follow-up care if you experience any severe side effects:

  • Emergency surgery to treat an incomplete abortion[4]

  • Antibiotics to treat an infection[4]

  • Emergency care for anaphylactic shock, caused by an allergic reaction to the abortion pill[5]

  • Post-abortion support if you experience emotional distress, such as grief, anxiety, or depression after taking the abortion pill[6]

What Should I Do Before Taking the Abortion Pill?

An unintended pregnancy can be one of the most stressful experiences of a woman’s life. It can be easy to panic and make an emotionally-charged decision. But you owe it to yourself to make an informed and empowered decision. Before taking the abortion pill, we recommend receiving an ultrasound and exploring all of your pregnancy options.

Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?

Ultrasounds determine two key things: pregnancy viability and gestational age.

It’s important to know your gestational age (meaning, how far along you are), as you can’t take the abortion pill beyond 10 weeks of pregnancy[7]. A viable pregnancy is one where the fetal heartbeat is detectable and the pregnancy is progressing normally. If your ultrasound determines that your pregnancy isn’t viable, abortion won’t be needed and you can seek out the proper medical care.
